There are many types of filter media, but which ones are right for your aquarium?

BIO Media

Bio media is a highly porous media that comes in many forms but ultimately the most important media in your filter. It houses beneficial bacteria that consumes waste and makes your aquarium water safe for your fish. Although this bacteria can live on every surface of your aquarium, having bio media in your filter allows more oxygen to pass through the media increasing the amount of bacterial colonies. Be sure to never discard this media and rinse with aquarium water each time you clean your filter. Highly recommended for every aquarium.

Mechanical Media

Mechanical media consist of Polyfoam Pads, Sponges & Filter Wool. It aids in trapping debris as the water is forced through your filter. Course polyfoam is great for trapping larger particles and makes a great pre-filter. While finer wool is designed to polish the water, trapping smaller particles and detritus. You can easily cut-to-size larger filter pads and wool to fit your type of filter. Course sponges can be rinsed and reused but you'll need to change your filter wool when it gets exhausted. Highly recommended for every aquarium.

Chemical Media

Chemical media can be used to remove impurities from your aquarium and reduce stress on your fish. The most common type is activated carbon. This can be found in the form of granules, pellets or infused media pads. Carbon is great for removing tannins, organic impurities, and medications. There is also a polymer synthetic media designed to remove impurities from the water that is reusable such as Purfiltrum. Other types of chemical media can reduce ammonia, phosphates & nitrates in your aquarium. These can come a resins or media pads that can be placed in your filter when necessary.
